We are off to what will be a massive outpouring of people demonstrating for PEACE and JUSTICE—for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, for halting the invasion, for an end to violence in the West Bank, for the safe release of hostages. And demanding the US government cease supporting and fanning the flames of war and genocide.
In 1948 the United Nations Genocide Convention defined genocide as any of five “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group:” killing members of the group, causing them serious bodily or mental harm, imposing living conditions intended to destroy the group, preventing births, and forcibly transferring children out of the group. Victims of genocide are not targeted randomly; rather, they are targeted because they are members of a specific targeted group.
We’re witnessing—and our government is wholly committed to and complicit with—a pre-announced genocide against the Palestinian people. The world has been told by high officials in the Israeli government that Palestinians living in Gaza were “human animals” who, already living in a massive open-air prison, would now be denied medicines, fuel, food, and water. Immediately the president of the US said that his government stood unequivocally with Israel. Israeli Major General Giora Eiland said publicly that “Creating a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza is a necessary means to achieve the goal. Gaza will become a place where no human being can exist.” Major General Ghassan Alian, Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, said “Human animals must be treated as such. There will be no electricity and no water [in Gaza], there will only be destruction. You wanted hell, you will get hell.”
It could not be clearer—this is the crime of genocide.
The US is no stranger to this evil—it was founded, after all, on centuries of genocide committed against Indigenous peoples and lineages.
CEASE-FIRE NOW
STOP the GENOCIDE
